This summer Radio Arte will be offering paid and unpaid opportunities for youth who want to use media to address social justice issues in our communities. After-school Matters Radio Journalism and Media
This ASM program is a a 6 week
apprenticeship where participants will learn how to write, research,
and produce their own radio documentaries, as they learn about the
issues being faced by the Pilsen and Little Village communities. Youth
will receive stipends for their participation. Program runs June 29th to August 7th, Monday through Friday, 11:30 AM - 4:00 PM.
To participate in this
program you must:
Between 14 and 21 years old, Live in the city of Chicago Fill out an application at Youth Ready Chicago before May 29th (NOTE: You may not be able to make the selection to work at Radio Arte, until late May. If this is the case, fill out an appilcation, and check back to make your selection) You should ALSO fill out a Training Program application here Be able to provide a Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
Qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview. Please note that not all applicants are interviewed, and not all who are interviewed are accepted into the training program. SALUD: Healing Through the Arts Immigration, health and media
Radio Arte is looking for youth ages
14-21 who are interested in using media, particularly radio and video,
to educate communities about health issues pertaining to immigrants. It
is a competitive 8 week paid internship which includes workshops in
sound production, performance, and mental health issues, and
facilitation of workshops. Program runs June 29th - August 21st, Monday - Thursday, 11:00 am - 3:00 PM
To participate in this program you must: Be between 14 and 21 years old Fill out the “SALUD” application here Experience working with immigrant communities, and/or health issues in Chicago is strongly desired Bilingual (Spanish-English) and immigrant youth are strongly encouraged to apply.
Deadline for applications: May 22nd, 2009 Qualified applicants will be asked for an interview. Those accepted to the program will be notified by June 5th.
This project is a collaboration between Radio Arte, Latinos Progresando and the National Museum of Mexican Art. Check out the SALUD summer theater project at www.latinospro.org.
Do you want to paint a picture with sounds? What do the next 100 years of Chicago look like?
Can you envision what Chicago look like in the next 100 years? In 1909, architect Daniel Burnham and a group of committed civic leaders published the Plan of Chicago, a visionary work that transformed Chicago into a world-class city. It’s 2009, and Radio Arte is looking for young people to envision and plan the next 100 years of Chicago through words and sounds.
Learn how to create “audio soundscapes” to tell the story of Chicago’s past, present, and future. Learn basic audio production and have your work broadcast on WRTE 90.5 FM Radio Arte and exhibited at the National Museum of Mexican Art.

Internships for Students Youth, Media and Social Justice – Unpaid
Radio Arte is looking for summer interns who have experience in youth development and/or media to support the Radio Arte Journalism and Media Training Program. Time commitment is flexible, Monday-Friday, 9 – 7 pm. We are looking for people who are interested in:
Mentoring youth in journalism and digital production Building a curriculum in journalism and media literacy Organizing workshops to promote the use of media for social justice Helping with grant writing and development Making Radio Arte sound archives accessible to the public (through our website)
To participate in this program, you must:
Have some experience in the field you are interested in: journalism, digital production, medial literacy, new media Be passionate about creating and using media to promote social justice Send a resume and cover letter to the training program Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
90.5 FM WRTE Radio Arte Chicago is an
initiative of the National Museum of Mexican Art. SALUD: Healing
through the Arts is funded by a grant from New Routes to Community
Health, a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with support
from the Benton Foundation. The Radio Arte Journalism and Media
Training Program is supported by the McCormick Foundation and the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
2010 Training Program sneak peak
Radio
Arte offers a free one-year training program for youth 17-24 (Winter) in journalism, digital production, broadcasting, and
using new media. Participants build up their skills through classes,
workshops and hands-on participation in the production of one of Radio
Arte’s flagship public affairs programs (First Voice/Primera Voz,
Homofrecuencia, Sin Papeles). These programs air live on 90.5 WRTE-FM.
Details about the training program: This program is offered in three phases:
The first 3 months participants take classes and workshops on the
basics of radio journalism, digital production, Federal Communication
Commission (FCC) rules and regulations, and reporting on social justice
issues.During following 6 months,
participants receive hands-on training in the production of one of
Radio Arte’s flagship public affairs programs that air live on 90.5
WRTE-FM. The last 3 months youth
develop an independent project, which can include creating a series of
audio documentaries, workshops or community forums related their work. After
graduation from the training program, participants are eligible to
submit a proposal for their own specialty show on Radio Arte, or Radio
Arte 2 (HD). In addition, even though we do not do job placement, we
can support the search for internships and available positions in the

RADIO ARTE'S TRAINING PROGRAM PRODUCTIONS
After students finish their first trimester in the Training Program, they become producers and reporters for one of these Radio Arte productions:
Primera Voz: This Spanish-language public affairs show is the only public broadcast in the country of its kind done by youth for youth. Airs Wednesdays at 6:00 PM.
First Voice: This English-language broadcast seeks to showcase youth's true voices and perspectives through in-depth reporting and discussions based around issues of social justice. Airs Tuesdays at 6:00 PM
Homofrecuencia: The only Spanish-language radio program for and by gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer and questioning youth. Recipient of special honors by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in 2007. Airs Mondays at 6:00 PM
Sin Papeles: This Spanish-language broadcast features interviews and news around immigration politics, focusing on information relevant to undocumented immigrants. It airs Sundays at 11:00 AM.
First Voice/ Withouth Borders: Radio Arte's immigration edition of First Voice features interviews, reports and news on immigration, in Chicago, the U.S. and the world. Airs Thursdays at 6:00 PM
